Every decade of life demands a different version of you! In your 40s, maintaining a healthy weight and feeling your best becomes so much more than just diet and exercise. There are major shifts happening in your body that make it feel like you are your own worse enemy. However, despite all the frustration, there is a feasible solution to the craziness your body seems to be walking through.

Your biggest frustrations in your 40s

Your body just seems to be confused. You feel like what always worked in the past to maintain your weight is no longer working. You are on stress overload and find yourself drinking and/or eating way too much far too often. The worse part about this is that you have absolutely no energy. You want to get back to feel like the best version of you, but are simply not motivated enough to figure out whats going on with everything else that you juggling.

1. It’s not you, it’s your hormones.

Brain fog, hair loss, sleepless nights, digestion issues, low sex drive, and vaginal dryness are all symptoms of something being off with your hormone levels. So many women simply chop these issue up to betting older, but there is likely a deeper issue.

In you 40s, your ovaries reduce the amount of testosterone and estrogen they produce. This effects so much more than your period and could be the cause for your struggle with weight loss. Weight loss is dependent on thyroid health, adrenal health, and hormone health. 

Your solution is to find a great ob/gyn that you trust. You can request a bloodwork to figure out where you are and how you can optimize levels in your body.

2. You’re consuming too many carbs.

Carbs are not the enemy! However, decreasing the amount of carbs you eat in a day to less than 100g can help with the weight that you seem to be gaining around your midsection and the brain fog you’re experiencing.

The older you get, the harder it is to maintain lean muscle mass. You should be prioritizing lean proteins, fiber-rich veggies, and healthy fats like avocado, nuts, and olive oils as your ideal energy sources.

3. You’re nutrient deficient.

There are times when your body needs more than what it can get from food. If you’ve been following a balanced diet and are still struggling with brain fog, that constant feeling like you’re tired and can’t concentrate, you may need to look into nutritional supplements. Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Omega 3, and a good multivitamin are great places to start.

4. You don’t exersice.

You can’t our exercise a bad diet, but a good diet won’t provide you with the benefits that exercise does both physically and mentally. If you have never been one to prioritize healthy movement, you need to now.

In your 40s you will be losing muscle mass-which aids in weight loss. Starting a  a strength training regime is going to be so valuable to you in these years. From bone density, to brain health, to skin elasticity, lifting weight is going to give you the most bang for your buck. We know that you are busy, but be intentional about giving yourself time to move your body and schedule it. Any exercise you do does not have to exceed 30 minutes and should be something you enjoy

Your 40’s are your opportunity to conquer the overwhelm and set yourself up for success.

If you haven’t done a great job at caring for your body in your 20s and 30s, there is a good chance that it will catch up with you in your 40s, but taking a good look at where you are and where you want to be will give you the opportunity to make the changes you need be the best version of you in this decade.
