Every decade of life demands a different version of you. There’s a significant shift in your body in your late 40s and 50s that can make it feel like being the best version of you is impossible, but I’ll continue to tell you that nothing is impossible.

Your biggest frustrations in your 50’s

You have had a massive shift in your body in the past few years. It feels like you’re going through puberty again, but it’s menopause. These symptoms sometimes feel intense because your hormones are either too low or out of control, and you don’t feel like yourself. On the outside, your body is holding on to weight in your stomach, and you’re not sleeping well. Internally, you’re experiencing digestive issues. You’re not as toned as you used to be; you’ve started worrying about bone loss. It’s frustrating, but with the proper support, you can kick menopause in the butt and get back to feeling like you!

1. You haven’t addressed the changing hormone levels in your body.

If you have not paired up with a progressive thinking OBGYN or a hormone specialist, now is the time!

Start the conversation with your doctor about the benefits and risks of hormone therapy, like bioavailable (not synthetic) hormone pellets. Not only can hormone therapy help with your metabolism and weight loss, but it can also address issues like hair loss, wrinkles, low sex drive, and less energy! Remember, weight loss depends on thyroid health, adrenal health, hormone health, and the health of your cells/mitochondria.

2. You’re not strength training or lifting weights.

Cardio is not king. While walking, riding a bike, and the elliptical are all great additions to a healthy exercise regime and great for stress relief, they will not provide the movement your body needs to build and retain muscle. In your 50s, you will lose muscle mass, which aids in weight loss, so begin a strength-building workout. You’ll start seeing and feeling the benefit if you are consistent and intentional.

3. You’re not eating for the changing needs of your body.

We can’t say it enough, but you must prioritize your protein intake to maintain a healthy weight. Protein plays a vital role in hormone regulation and supports our bodies’ changing needs as we age. Not only does protein help build and maintain muscle, but bones, cartilage, and skin. Your hair and nails are comprised mostly of protein! High protein foods are the perfect balance of calorie and nutrient density and require more energy to digest, meaning you’ll satisfy hunger while saving calories.

4.You’re not sure what supplements you should be taking.

At times hormones, diet and exercise aren’t enough, and to feel your best, you need a little help. On top of checking hormone levels and strength training, here are a few things you should implement into your wellness routine:

  • Fiber Supplements will keep you regular. Sometimes the increased protein in your diet can bind you up.
  • Vitamin B6 helps you process your food and turn it into energy.
  • Vitamin B12 is the happy vitamin and helps keep blood and brain function in order.
  • Vitamin D does a lot! It helps protect against age-related changes like diabetes, heart disease, and breast and colorectal cancers. It also aids in the absorption of Calcium.
  • Omega-3 Fatty Acids can help regulate blood and help with inflammation.
  • Magnesium will help with muscle function and energy.
  • Probiotics make more good bacteria in your digestive system.
  • Calcium + Vitamin K2 will help keep bones healthy.

It’s a long list; you don’t have to incorporate ALL of them. Start with one, incorporate it for two weeks, monitor how it makes you feel, then include the next supplement. Not sure where to buy your vitamins? We’ve collaborated with JayLab Pro to curate a list of everything you may need to achieve optimal health.
